Beware of slow walking!

Do you imagine that our walking speed may determine who is most likely to die of heart disease? A British study found that middle-aged adults who said they were walking at a slow pace were twice as likely to die of heart disease during the study period as those who said they were walking fast.

The results of the study were confirmed by researchers even after factors that could affect the outcome were taken into account, such as exercise, diet, smoking and alcohol intake.

The study suggests that "a simple measure of the rate of walking speed" may help doctors to determine the risk of death from heart disease.

Researchers analyzed information on more than 420,000 middle-aged adults in Britain and followed them for 6 years. None of the participants had heart disease at the time of admission to assess their pace, whether slow, medium, or fast. Participants also tested an effort to determine fitness.

Those who said that their slow pace was more likely to die from heart disease were 1.8 to 2.4 times in the six years of age than those who said that their walking was fast. Some 8,600 participants died, about 1650 of them with heart disease.
