A strike in Catalonia province to protest violence during the referendum on secession
Catalonia residents are planning a strike on Tuesday to protest violence in the province last Sunday during a referendum on secession from Spain.
Public transportation will be disrupted, schools will be closed, and hospitals will be restricted to emergency departments only.
The Catalonian government announced that more than 90 percent of respondents in the referendum supported secession from Spain.
Authorities in Catalonia said more than 2.2 million people had participated in the referendum out of a total of 5.3 million registered voters.
The government in Madrid considers the referendum illegal and vowed to stop it after the Constitutional Court ruled it invalid.
Hundreds were injured when Spanish police intervened to prevent the vote on Sunday.
The European Commission said the referendum was illegal according to the Spanish constitution.
And warned that Catalonia could find itself outside the European Union if separated from Spain.
According to local authorities in Catalonia, it is not seeking a "shocking" separation with Spain, but wants a new understanding with the central government in Madrid.
