Dead and missing slip into a Malaysian tourist island

Malaysian authorities on Saturday found the bodies of two construction workers and 12 others were found missing as a result of a landslide at a workshop on Penang Island.
The firefighters said the incident took place shortly before 9:00 am (0100 GMT) in Tanjung Bunga area north of the island, according to AFP,

They pointed out that they had retrieved the bodies from the mound, while a dozen others remained missing

Entire parts of the hill collapsed on a workshop to build houses.

Anwar Omar, a local police official, said the victims were most likely migrant workers.

In Malaysia, a number of foreigners work in sectors where they are under great physical pressure for low wages, such as construction.

The reasons for the collapse were not known, but the mayor of the island, Maimouna Sharif, ruled out the idea of its association with climate moisture in the absence of heavy rains a few days ago.

The rapid pace of construction activities on Penang Island has raised concerns about the environment and safety regulations.
