Two foreigners injured in 7.0 magnitude quake in China

A French man and a Canadian woman were injured in a 7.0-magnitude earthquake that rocked the popular tourist destination of Jiuzhaigou in southwest China on Tuesday evening (August 8th).

Maxon Fallon, 18, was injured in the legs while an unnamed Canadian woman was slightly injured in the head.

The two tourists are being treated at Shaab Hospital in Jiuzhaigou Prefecture.

The exact number of foreign victims in the disaster has yet to be released.

The doctors who examined Falun X-ray legs said that shrapnel had entered his right leg, making urgent surgery necessary to prevent the outbreak.

"We were lying on open ground in search of shelter when a big stone fell and my brother was hit in the leg," said Roman Fallon, who is studying in Beijing. The brothers were staying at a hotel with their mother in Jiuzhaigou when the quake struck.

"They bled heavily and the hotel staff gave towels and white wines to clean the wound, helped me tie his leg with plastic bags, and took one of the hotel staff to a nearby clinic in his own car.

He said he waited an hour or so until an ambulance arrived and took them to the provincial hospital.

He explained that the medical staff was very efficient, did not leave us a person and leave and everything in good condition.

"My mother is in a state of panic after the earthquake and she is recovering from yesterday's experience and we hope we can go home as soon as possible," he said.

Doctors said a Canadian woman could leave the hospital two or three days later.

The woman said she received excellent care, especially rescuers and doctors who gave her great help.

The earthquake in Sichuan province killed 13 people and injured 175 others, according to the provincial government's information department.

An earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale hit Wenchuan in May 2008, 200 kilometers south of Jiuzhaigou, killing at least 80,000 people.
